🎧 New Episode with Cynthia Heard
🎧New podcast episode This week we return to our exploration of our themes of public service and civic responsibility, as we welcome Cynthia Mitchell-Heard, a longtime civic leader and the current COO of the Los Angeles Urban League to the show. Cynthia has the honor to be the first guest on the show that I didn’t already know in my personal life and I couldn’t be happier that it worked out this way. One of my hypotheses behind this whole endeavor is that the podcast can be an incredible tool for opening up new meaningful relationships. And that’s exactly what’s happened here.
I wanted to have Cynthia on the show to dive deeper into the topic of racial justice, something that’s been top of mind in this country lately and an issue that has already come up in previous episodes as well. Both Miguel Santana and Ana Guerrero talked about the role that racism has played in their lives as we explored the public policy landscape today.
In this important conversation, we went deep into the issue and explored:
How economic opportunity has replaced civil rights as the key battleground in the racial justice fight
Why the era of corporate grandstanding / virtue signaling has
to come to an endHow equity is really a function of diversity and inclusion
And
Why privilege is something that should never eclipse service.
Cynthia also shared the fascinating origin story behind her lifelong dedication to public service. During this discussion, I could literally feel her frustration at the lack of progress on this issue over the course of her career but I walked away feeling both inspired and optimistic by her passion and her steadfast commitment to the cause. And I think that you all will too.
Thanks again for tuning in. As always, hope you enjoy
Enjoy!
